Catedral De Mi Padre: a Spiritual Mezcal Experience

Tequila and mezcal popularity in North America is at an all-time high. Reports show a rise in the volume sales of tequila and mezcal are set to jump by more than 31% between 2021 and 2026, largely due to the demand in the US.

Stoelzle Glass Pennsylvania proudly works with Catedral Mezcal, one of the most unique mezcals, with an equally unique story behind the brand. Director of Public Relations Karen Block tells us why Catedral Mezcal should be on your shopping list this fall.

Tell us about Catedral De Mi Padre?

We started as a father-daughter duo, Jeff and Sydney Block, who have spent the last couple of years curating the best in class mezcals.

Catedral Mezcal is bringing farm to bottle in a revolutionary way by offering six varieties of mezcal made by six different Master Mezcaleros, which has never been done before. We are taking masters in their craft and bringing them together under one roof, one name, to showcase the unique complexities and intricacies of mezcal to the US consumer.

What sets you apart from other mezcal brands?

As a family-run business, we have set out on an expedition to bring farm to bottle in a revolutionary way. Our mezcals are made by hand and crafted in small batches using old family recipes. We have spent more than three years identifying the best-in-class, six varieties of wild agaves, and we are proud to partner with these men (and women) behind the bottle. We are also focusing on a new way to market mezcal, with a western spin on things, while having approachable pricing on all our expressions, and hanging our hat on the quality of the mezcal.

What’s the story behind the name, “Catedral De Mi Padre”?

Like religion, mezcal has been passed down through generations and lives on through traditions. We believe Mezcal is magic. Sipping it is a spiritual experience that instantly connects you to nature. Our Master Mezcaleros have delicately refined the pure and natural essence of agave plants to stimulate taste buds, open your senses and ignite consciousness. Merging culture, history, and impeccable taste, Catedral Mezcal elevates the drinking experience to sipping spiritually.

Why the focus on mezcal?

We live half the year in Oaxaca, which is where 98% of the world’s mezcal is made. We started our mezcal brand to share our love of this truly artisanal drink and the incredible people who make it, with US consumers. The opportunity to work together as a father-daughter team motivated us to start Catedral Mezcal. Sharing our passion for mezcal with our customers and enhancing their appreciation for this unique Spirit brings us constant joy and reinforces our commitment to build a mezcal company that respects and celebrates mezcal and the mezcaleros.

What are the different flavors and varieties?

The varieties are vast and include Espadin, Ensamble (Espadin + Cuishe), Ensamble (Espadin + Mexicano), Madre Cuishe, Tobala, and Mexicano.

Why six varieties?

We found that that six was a great number to come to market with and really showcase the breadth and complexity of mezcal, but in the future, we do hope to build on this display and broaden our offerings. It also happens to be that we offer a perfect six-pack case!

Do you consistently partner with six master Mezcaleros or is there a rotation of partenrs?

Since we have partnered with all our Mezcaleros on a meaningful level, we plan to only work with our current six Masters. Again, we have hopes to add to the collection and bring in more Masters and expressions down the line.

Tell us more about the quality of Catedral Mezcal?

We say, ask the experts! Since our brand launch just five months ago in June 2022, we have won five prestigious spirits awards including a gold medal for our Ensamble (Espadin + Mexicano) at the 2022 Las Vegas Global Spirits Awards. Additionally, our Mexicano won a silver medal at the L.A. Spirits Awards, our Espadin won a silver medal at the California Craft Spirits Competition, our Ensamble (Espadin + Cuishe) won a silver medal at the NY International Spirits Competition, and our Tobala won a silver medal at the NY World Wine and Spirits Competition.

Catedral Mezcal is the most awarded new mezcal in 2022!

You have shared a lot with us about the mezcal, what abou the bottle design?

We selected the Charleston bottle because its curved shoulder is suggestive of church architecture and the arches found in many cathedrals. Our name, Catedral de mi Padre Mezcal, and our logo both reference the famous Santa Domingo Cathedral in Oaxaca and we felt that the Charleston bottle was the perfect way to highlight our brand concept. We also wanted to reflect the handmade essence of mezcal in our bottle design. We chose to add a handmade leather cuff to the bottom of each bottle to allow consumers to easily identify our six varieties. This also added a tactile element to the bottle to enhance the pouring experience. In addition, this leather “boot” denotes a western, cowboy theme that is a pillar of our branding.

How did you select Stoelzle for the bottle manufacture?

We were introduced to Stoelzle during the pandemic when sourcing bottles became difficult due to supply chain issues. Working with Stoelzle was seamless and we found their staff to be very responsive and helpful.

What is your local impact, when it comes to sustainability?

We are committed to local partnerships. We have given a percentage of the company equity to the Mezcalero families we work with, joining as business partners and comrades.

We plan to further support the local community through advanced sustainability efforts as we grow. Through partnership, we hope to build relationships, foster innovation, and ultimately, continue to share the magic that is mezcal.
