Step 1
The key phrase behind this unique glass design and manufacture project was given to us as “A Wild Harmony” – referring to the breathtaking archipelago off the northeastern coast of Scotland, The Orkneys. To help with the development and to ensure we were capturing all the cues available from the subject matter, we visited the Orkney Islands, along with John Galvin, and the Edrington / Highland Park team.
Molten Lava inspired the design team and helped them create a pack which would conjure up the birth of the islands through volcanic activity 400 million years ago.

Step 2
Very early on, it was decided that light would play a significant role in this project. Various teardrop shapes carrying a variety of surface textures were created, along with a mood board to visualise and express the ideas.

In conjunction with the development of the bottle, we began creating concepts for the typographical decoration, which would form the basis of the engraved text which would be etched into the glass surface. The lettering would be positioned so that it was visible through the “window” in the presentation box, creating a cohesive design.
To continue with the organic feel of the bottle, we allowed the texture to flow up the neck and blend seamlessly with the specially developed finish and closure.

The final glass has been hand-picked, polished and etched. The whole pack is visually stunning and an incredible example of both the collaboration between two natural materials, glass and oak – as well as that of customer and the artisans.
